The great Best Buy guide

My finest tips for Treo 600/650 owners...
And six excellent Palm programs...

First some helpful tips
And most of them, work with any fine pocket computer...

Hmm... I mainly use my Treo 600 to plan my life and to always do the most important, first... Handle several big complex projects (including detailed story lines for 46 books) so I directly can add great ideas and also develop things, when I travel or just wait on something... Then can I finally manage my contacts, in a smart way and especially follow up meetings... Compare and investigate things to buy, collect observations and facts (for vantechmag and my future books) sometimes play the elegant free "minefree" and never ever forget anything, anymore...
But webpages (like this one) any other info I almost never need mobile and especially emails - have I only in my notebook, to make things less complicated and to avoid tons of spam in my SmartPhone... And I bring always a superior Panasonic Lumix with 12x stabilized optical zoom (that anyhow is amazingly compact) so I would never dream of using the lousy camera and I have not begun to explore the possibility to use my Treo as a fine music player, yet!

Many people start wrong and simply confuse what info the PIM programs actually are made for, which make it much harder to find stuff and you loose also some of the programs unique advantages, if you put your info in the wrong place... And if you start wrong, can it become a bad habit... The Address Book - is for any contact and other info, about people or companies... Calender - is for anything you should do a specific time, or repeatedly, or as soon as possible... ToDo - is for things to fix soon, when you have time, later or just remember... So stuff with a deadline, should be in the calender OR be noted with high priority and the end date in the text... So you will never need timed todo's or alarms (that also make every text line shorter) there... And a text program as CardTXT or SiEd - is for massive collections of facts, like a big page for films (to buy, your collection and what you seen) and to plan projects... Normally with a "easy section menu" at the beginning, so you can jump to a section with help of the find & replace function... I simply put a "." at the beginning of each search word, as "Films to .buy" just write "*Buy" in the menu and search on ".bu" to jump!

I sort my ToDo post with following priorities, which might help you... 1 first (where I have a "Price & open" post with an extra note, that list some common prices and some places open times) 2 soon 3 when time 4 later 5 archive

You should also create smart categories, especially for contacts and and todo, that both help you sort and find, people and actions... I have following categories and a few private...
Contact: 00 Friends, Div Service, Biz, Shops, Vantechmag, Wind (future project) x Projects ToDo: Buy div, Buy home, Fix indoor, Fix out, Vantechmag, Wind, x Holiday, x Projects And program windows: Main, Games, System, On Keys (for programs assigned to a direct key) Extra (for rarely used programs)

And only in Palm's...

You can then cycle (move) through the ToDo categories, if you highlight categories and press the ToDo button again... That make it possible to easy view every priority 1 to 3 post (without scrolling) even if you have up to 100 posts and about 12 categories... You can also cycle trough calender views and program windows (with the home button) in the same way...
The "backspace" key under "P" work also normally as return to the last window...
And if you don't find something anyhow, have you the amazing fast "Global Find" function (that search everywhere, in your Palm) with the "option" and "shift" button...
I use also the four extra text fields in contacts (the address book) for "Next act" to keep track (with a priority number) of the next action we plan and when that should happen... Sometimes do I also link to a post in the calender, about the action... "Done" where I note loans and stuff I sold, with date... "Facts" with born dates and account numbers... "Talents" to note any special talent... Then can you set up, so you can view two of this field in the desktop program and even view one of them in some Palm contact programs, you can buy... And it's especially great to see the "Next act" field directly!
You don't have to cut & paste to move an event, in the calender... Just point at the event, click details and select another date, or the +7 symbol to jump one week!
If you write the first letter of anything in a popup list, will the highlight jump there!
You can easy move six of your favourite programs, to the three "program buttons" and then select three of them, with "option" plus a program button... Just go to the program view (applications) select "pref" in the "system" window and Buttons!

And six excellent Palm programs
That simply make Palm almost perfect...

One great advantage with Palm is the amazing wealth of over 27.000 programs, that also are surprisingly cheap and often totally free... But that giant catalogue may also be overwhelming for a Palm beginner (or anyone) because most of the programs are not very good, or have at least clearly finer alternatives and just a few are truly excellent... I guess "only" 1000 of them are state of the art and less than 300 are "supreme" applications, that most people might need or love...
Lucky for you, did I try to find every supreme Palm program, in the biggest and most informative site... Click here to visit PalmGear, in a new window... When I bought my Treo 600 and that HUGE task, took me six long weeks!!

My first goal was to make my new Treo smarter than my 10 years old Psion series3c and that was not easy, even if Palm OS is the finest alternative today... And some tiny functions are still smarter in my old Psion, but Palm have other big advantages...

Yes, Palm OS is a lot smarter and especially more easy to use, than the current alternatives from MS (with about 16.000 extra programs) and Symbian (under 3000 programs) but they did anyhow miss some vital things...

The fine Personal Information Management suite (with agenda, to do lists, address book and "memo" program) offer no good way to save fact and work with bigger text's... Memo (for simple text notes) has a silly limit of only 4KB and only undo, cut, copy and paste...
But there are luckily two excellent free programs, that handle a lot more text and give you the basic text function you need - including save as, goto beginning or end and especially advanced find & replace, so you can have a "smart menu" at the beginning... And the excellent CardTXT is free, very stable, save max 4000KB files and you can hide the elegant tool bar, for max screen view... But you can only select text with the pen, if you don't get the selection program below and it has no redo... Then is SiEd by Ben Roe also free, very stable, save up to 100KB files and has only a status bar (with filename) for max screen view... Plus offer you a split screen option - so you can view two files, or even two parts of the same file... You can even select text with shift plus the navipad... And reload file, redo, find again and stats... But you must remember to save the file with SiEd, before you open another text file and the cursor is little too thin, but the programmer did promise me to fix this soon...

And you can only select text with the separate pen and not with "shift plus the navigation pad" except in the smart SiEd text program... But that vital limitation fix the excellent FieldPlus that also is free (but only a few Palm program shops have it) and you need that one, if you want to select text (without pulling out the pen all the time) in CardTXT or the contact, calender and ToDo program!

Even the clipboard is limited to max 4KB but PowerClip by PalmPowerups (that also is a free program) does automatically handle up to 64KB and that is normally enough!

And if you get CardTXT or SiEd and have a 8MB memory card or bigger, should you naturally store your text files on the card... So it leave a lot more space in RAM and are safe for battery failure or hard resets... But then does you need a program that make Treo to behave as a card reader (or an extra hard drive) and the best for that seem to be Card Export II by Softick, at about 12usd.

Then has only Treo 600 (not 650) the ultra smart "floating event" function in the agenda (calender) which automatically move stuff you didn't had time to do, to next day... And that is a MUST HAVE function, if you like to put "as soon as possible" events in your calender and then don't want to move them manually, every day... But you can invest 28usd in DateBk6 that is the most advanced calendar program and has that lovely function, plus many more!

Finally has Palm OS no easy wake up, timer or stop watch functions... And that is rather dumb, in a smart phone... But you can naturally use the basic alarm function, in the calendar and then are there several excellent programs for this functions... The finest is Palmary Clock that also can show very elegant clocks, at about 13usd.

You are also very welcome to inform me about other smart user tip, for Palm
600/650/700p and any program that fix the problems above, in an even better way...
